L’Occitane leads fight for sight

L’Occitane has renewed its commitment to the fight against preventable blindness with the launch of its fundraising Solidarity Soap (RRP £3) this month, with 100% of profits being donated to NGOs dedicated to fighting avoidable sight loss around the world.

As part of its ongoing commitment to quality and sight-saving eye care, L’Occitane has also helped fund the Orbis International Flying Eye Hospital by sponsoring the construction of a Patient Care & Laser Room on board its new aircraft.

The Flying Eye Hospital features state-of-the-art medical and training equipment and resources, and travels the world to perform sight-saving eye surgeries, as well as hands-on training to local health professionals in developing countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The new L’Occitane Patient Care & Laser Room serves as a treatment area for Orbis’ patients during pre- and post-operative eye assessments, as well as a training area for local ophthalmologists.

Over the past 16 years, L’Occitane has contributed more than €1,600,000 to support Orbis. Rebecca Cronin, CEO at Orbis UK, says: “L’Occitane’s support of Orbis has enabled us to reach so many people suffering unnecessarily from preventable blindness. This year, our partnership alone will see us reach 500,000 people at risk of blinding trachoma in Ethiopia, a painful condition that can be prevented with antibiotics. We are immensely grateful for L’Occitane’s continued commitment to helping us bring about change to ensure everyone has access to the quality eye care they deserve.”

Almost 285 million people across the world are visually impaired, yet 80% of blindness is preventable or treatable. In 2016, L’Occitane invested over €2m to fight preventable blindness and the brand’s goal is to provide eye care for 10 million people by 2020.
