What lurks beneath: you'd be surprised

How often do you ask customers to consider what harmful bacteria and germs may be lurking in their make-up brushes? How often do you ask if they clean their make-up brushes? And how clean are the brushes you use on customers in-store?

The level of germs and bacteria that these everyday beauty tools can harbour is quite alarming. These nasty little invisible organisms can cause spots, skin abscesses and infections, and to stop them building up, professionals recommend that make-up brushes should be deep cleaned once a month. However, according to a recent survey, 44 of people never wash their make-up brushes. And those who do probably don’t do it very often.

We may be put off cleaning our brushes because it can be fiddly, messy and time-consuming, and they usually take hours to dry. But thanks to inventor Tom Pellereau (winner of The Apprentice and inventor of the curved nail file), this could soon be a thing of the past.

Tom says: “A well-known beauty expert told me about the dangers of bacteria on make-up brushes and challenged me to invent a faster, more effective way to clean and dry them.”

As part of Tom’s research, 35 brushes from consumers, make-up artists and in-store beauty counters were tested in an independent laboratory to measure the total number of bacteria on each. It was found that 58 per cent of the brushes had high levels of bacteria and 34 per cent had dangerously high levels. Two of the brushes had more bacteria than would be expected on a toilet brush. And one brush with more than 40,000 bacteria on it had come from a beauty counter and had actually been cleaned the night before. Scarily, it could have been used on the next person to enter the store.

In creating a solution, Tom says it has been a lot more difficult than he first expected. “But following months of problem solving,” he says, “I’ve created a device which can hygienically clean and dry any make-up brush in just 30 seconds.”

Tom’s revolutionary Make Up Brush Cleaner and Drier will be ready for launch soon. In the meantime, you can register here to make sure you’re one of the first to find out more. Registering will also enter you into a prize draw to win one of your very own.
