Holiday heroes

As your customers get ready to jet off to their chosen destinations, they won’t want to waste space and weight allowance on unnecessary products. Laura Pollard shows us how to pack light and lean with just the essentials.

Getting set to jet

Leading British make-up artist and facialist Frances Prescott shares her holiday product-saving tips. First up – decanting: “Don’t take full sizes of anything. It’s a pain to pack them and bring bottles back, and could risk leaking,” she warns. Refillable bottles such as Superdrug Travel Bottles (RRP £1.59) are perfect for the job.

For smooth, sunkissed skin all trip long, and saving all-important suitcase space, Frances recommends: “Advise customers to do away with shaving kits and instead, wax a few days before they travel. Also, they should start exfoliating skin about ten days before the holiday, and keep it moisturised to prepare for sun exposure and a strong tan.”

For customers concerned about baring their pale winter-hidden skin, recommend self-tanning before they travel. However, Frances warns: “Don’t fake tan to an unnatural colour; the point is simply to take the glare off, not arrive with a full-on tan.” St. Moritz 5-in-1 Tanning Mousse (RRP £8), official sponsor of the Baywatch Movie, is available in medium and dark shades, and develops in four to six hours. For those who don’t like to fake it, Frances suggests mixing some bronzer with sunscreen for an instant subtle glow.

Leave mascaras and brow products at home and instead opt for dyed lashes and tinted brows. While a salon visit would previously have been necessary, both lashes and brows can now be tinted at home thanks to products like Eylure Pro-Lash Dylash (RRP £9.50) and Pro-Brow Dybrow (RRP £7.50). For products your customers can’t travel without, Frances recommends anything with multitasking benefits. Frances says: “I actually went away once with just four products: concealer, tinted moisturiser, mascara and Stila Convertible Colour (RRP £16) to stain lips and cheeks.”

When it comes to skin care, Frances’ own TriBalm (RRP £39) is a three-in-one product that will cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise skin, saving time and space.

As for hair styling, just pack an empty spritz bottle, says Frances: “For beachy, tousled and textured hair, just fill the spritzer with sea water and spritz away." For those who require greater care for their sun-drenched hair, recommend Dr Paw Paw 7-in-1 Hair Treatment Styler (RRP £12.99). Offering seven benefits in one – protects from heat, reduces split ends, detangles, treats, smoothes, aids blow drying and adds shine – it’s the ultimate space-saving, multitasking holiday hair essential.

Regarding hair colour, celebrity hairdresser Phil Smith says: “Aim to colour your hair just under a week before you leave.” Phil recommends packing a leave-in conditioner, such as his newly-launched Coco-Licious Coconut Water Leave-in Conditioner (RRP £3.50). However, when it comes to styling, he recommends keeping it low key: “A high bun will protect your scalp and ends.”

City chic

Top of our hotlist for a chic city break is Jo Malone Little Luxuries (RRP from £14). Now customers can do city chic in style with everything from their favourite body wash to their beloved fragrance in travel-friendly containers under 100ml.

Equally, Elemis Luxury Travel Essentials Set for Him (RRP £42.50) is the perfect travel companion for any grooming-savvy gent. It contains five cleansing and uplifting facial and body products and its monogram bag, designed by British designer Misha Nonoo, is a practical yet fashionable addition to any man’s city break style.

When out and about, customers should focus on protecting themselves from city pollution. Bourjois City Radiance Skin Protecting Foundation (RRP £9.99) helps block harmful pollution and UV rays and gives a flawless, brighter complexion. Alternatively, Clarins UV Plus Anti Pollution Day Screen SPF 50 (RRP £32) offers dual protection from sun and pollution damage for busy city tourists. For all over protection, Institut Esthederm City Protect Incellium Spray (RRP £35) can be sprayed onto the face, body and hair to defend against urban stressors and even helps fix make-up in place.

At the end of the day, city goers can turn to Lancer Makeup Removing Wipes (RRP £32) or Clinique Take The Day Off Micellar Cleansing Towelettes for Face & Eyes (RRP £16) to cleanse and soothe skin.

Adventure seeker

Whether your customer is trekking, white water rafting or on safari, any adventure holiday demands high-performing products. Even the most intrepid adventurer might wish to wear a touch of make-up. Clarins Truly Waterproof Mascara (RRP £21.50) provides 12 hours of longer, thicker lashes while protecting them from the sun, chlorine and seawater, while Flique Lipstick (RRP £9.99) is smudgeproof, waterproof and highly pigmented for the perfect pout. Keep make-up in place with a setting spray like Rimmel #Insta Fix and Go 2 in 1 Primer and Setting Spray (RRP £6.99), which can also be worn underneath make-up to act as a primer.

Don’t let frizz ruin your customers’ adventures. Moroccanoil Frizz Control (RRP £9.65) boasts weather-resistant and climate control properties to help keep hair calm and manageable in damp or dry environments. Alternatively, Phil Smith Coco-Licious Texturising Spray (RRP £3.50) adds natural waves and defined texture to limp locks.

For a cooling spray to refresh on-the-go, turn customers to Boots Hot Weather Cooling Spray (RRP £3.99) to instantly calm and hydrate the skin. For the face, Garnier Moisture Bomb Protecting Hydrating Mist (RRP £9.99) instantly refreshes skin while providing antioxidant and SPF 30 protection, and can be used over make-up.

Festival-goer

When it comes to festivals, it’s all about products that require no water. Recommend Zerreau Towel-Off Shampoo (RRP £7.95) and Body Foam (RRP £3.99), which not only replace the need for a shower when running water is not readily available, but are also vegan, eco-friendly, recyclable and free from parabens.

To freshen festival locks, Tigi Bed Head Oh Bee Hive Dry Shampoo (RRP £9.30) will absorb excess oil and add volume.

Reduce your daily facial ritual to the basics, such as Bee Good Honey and Wild Water Mint 3-in-1 Cleansing Water (RRP £10). Requiring no water, it can simply be wiped over skin on cotton wool to remove make-up and impurities. Alternatively, Water Wipes (RRP £2.70) offer a clean visage in one cloth, using nothing but water and a touch of grapefruit seed extract.

For teeth cleaning, White Glo Dissolving Whitening Films (RRP £4.99) are a water-free way to freshen breath and whiten teeth.

Make-up does not come any more compact and disposable than Mai Couture Papiers (RRP from £15.50). These tiny sheets of paper are infused with foundation, blusher and highlighter, and can simply be rubbed onto skin.

Sun protection is crucial, and customers should pay special attention to often forgotten areas like lips; recommend Dr. Organic Organic Aloe Vera Cherry Lip Balm (RRP £3.49). The unique combination of bioactive ingredients and extracts combine with organic cherry to instantly hydrate the lips, while SPF 15 protects from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Beach bum

If there’s one thing every woman battles with, it’s finding a mascara that doesn’t end up giving them panda eyes in the pool. For customers who can’t battle the beach without fluttery lashes, recommend Rimmel Scandal’Eyes Reloaded Waterproof Mascara (RRP £6.99), which claims 24-hour staying power even in the wettest conditions. Follow with a spritz of Clarins Fix Make Up Spray (RRP £24) for a fixing veil with protective properties to keep skin safe and hydrated in the sun.

Locks need both protection and styling when on holiday, and the dual-performing Tigi Bed Head Totally Beachin’ Beach Bound Spray (RRP £11.99) will help hair fight humidity and provide a shielding layer against the sun too.

For UV protection when soaking up the rays, you could recommend Green People Sun Travel Collection (RRP £37.95), which includes Sun Lotion SPF 30, Sun Tan Accelerator SPF 15 and Hydrating After Sun. The award-winning range is free from harsh chemicals, making it suitable for even the most sensitive skin and those prone to prickly heat. For ultimate protection and ease of use, Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster (RRP £42) can be added to day cream or make-up, or used alone for factor 50 protection.
